Indonesia, with its diverse islands including Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Flores, is a key player in the global coffee industry. Coffee cultivation in Indonesia began when the VOC, the world's largest trading company at the time, introduced coffee seeds to break the Arab world's coffee monopoly. Today, Indonesia is known for its robust coffee production, particularly the Robusta variety, which dominates the market due to past leaf rust outbreaks.

Indonesian coffee is celebrated for its distinctive flavors, shaped by the unique growing conditions of each island. Sumatra's Mandheling, a well-known grade from North Sumatra, and Sulawesi's Kalossi, grown in the iron-rich Toraja Highlands, offer distinct profiles. Mandheling is renowned for its full body and earthy undertones, while Kalossi is appreciated for its complex flavor, influenced by the island’s unique soil composition.

Sigma Coffee recommends the following Indonesian coffees:

Indonesia Mandheling Grade 1: Known for its rich, full-bodied flavor with spicy and creamy notes, complemented by hints of dark chocolate and herbs.
Indonesia Kalossi Grade 1: Offers a round, full body with a complex flavor profile that includes floral and spicy undertones, balanced by a mild acidity.

Indonesian coffee offers a creamy and rounded taste profile with mild acidity, capturing the essence of the islands' diverse and vibrant coffee culture.
